Orkestra Akademik Başkent is established under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal in 2003. The foundation of the orchestra was realised by Ertuğ Korkmaz who was the permanent conductor of the orchestra until 2018 and the artistic director was İsmail Lütfü Erol in the same period. Apart from the annual program, the orchestra realised many concert tours and gave festival concerts in both varios cities ot Turkey and abroad. Having a repertoire ranging from baroque period to contemporary music, the orchestra also realised the world premiere of many new compositions and welcomed new approaches and has been highly acclaimed for its energetic and exquisite interpretations. Well known musicians like Alexandra Conunova, Aneleen Lenaerts, Benedict Kloeckner, Benyamin Sönmez, Elvin Hoxha Ganiev Emre Elivar, Emre Şen, Enrique Batiz, Gökhan Aybulus, Gustav Rivinius Gülsin Onay, Gürer Aykal, İdil Biret, Igor Pikayzen, Lucienne Renaudin – Vary, Martin Berkofsky, Davide Alogna, Salvatore Accordo, Soyoung Yoon, Rocco Filipppini, Yamandu Costa took part in orchestra’s concerts.
Orkestra Akademik Başkent performed in the openig concert of St. Petersburg Piano Festival which was organized as part of the 60th anniversery of the establishment of UNESCO and performed on the opening concert as the first orchestra invited from Turkey. The orchestra has also been included in the recordings of Turkish Guitar Concertos puslished by Çağsav and currently is in partnership with the Computer Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University a research study conceming a responsive, Al interfaced virtual performer. In 2024 for the celebrations of 100th year of Turkish-Dutch Friendship, the orchestra made a collaboration concert with Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra in Denizli’s Hierapolis Ancient Theatre. Orhun Orhon has been the artictic director and permanent conductor of the orchestra since 2018.
